New York Times Interview With Obama From February 27th; Obama talks about Muslim Prayer:

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 12:46PM by justanerd1975 35 Comments - 266 Views

On February 27th, speaking to Kristof of The New York Times, Barack Hussein Obama said the Muslim call to prayer is "one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset."

In an interview with Nicholas Kristof, published in The New York Times, Obama recited the Muslim call to prayer, the Adhan, "with a first-class [Arabic] accent."
The opening lines of the Adhan (Azaan) is the Shahada:

"Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme!
Allah is Supreme! Allah is Supreme!
I witness that there is no god but Allah
I witness that there is no god but Allah
I witness that Muhammad is his prophet? "

According to Islamic scholars, reciting the Shahada, the Muslim declaration of faith, makes one a Muslim. This simple yet profound statement expresses a Muslim's complete acceptance of, and total commitment to, the message of Islam. Obama chanted it with pride and finesse.

COMMENTS:

I thought it was scary serving under LBJ as commander in chief but this guy Obama is a dangerous naive fool. Will our boys in the military be required to sing Cumbya to the terrorists under his command? lol

1

There is nothing wrong with islam or being muslim.

2

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being muslim.

And I don't understand how this makes him a "dangerous naive fool".

Kumbaya is a spiritual folk song, you're obviously a spiritual person justa, so I'm not sure how that all ties in either. What would be wrong with singing a song like that?

justanerd---i've read ALOT of ur posts, especially before the election and now these posts.
and i've kept quiet, because to be honest im not a confrontational person and i dont want to start any sort of arguments or discussion. but i cant help but notice ur severe hatred, not only for islam and muslims, but for any religion that is not christianity. u deem all people who do not follow christianity as going to hell.
now if u are as religious as ur posts seem to imply, u r not representing ur religion in the truthful way. from what i know christiany is based on love and forgiveness and the whole "turning the other cheek" mentality.
u r not god justanerd. u r not his prophet. it is not ur job to judge people. if u truly believe in god and his almightiness, u would be the least bit humble, and move aside and let god do the judging.

I feel the same way jnerd, my friend. Can you please give the guy a break and let the country heal and grow forward. You seem to be painting everything with a really broad brush. Your interpretation of your faith is sacred to you, just as others is to them.

6

Thank you for the story Justanerd Smiling Dont allow people to put words in your mouth or tell you youre wrong for keeping a watchful eye on Obama.

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 2:55pm

7

It's one thing to keep a watchful eye on our next President, it's an entirely different thing to perpetuate the completely needless fear and hatred of the Muslim religion.

justanerd shows profound ignorance and discriminations of islam and the muslim faith on a regular basis. Not only is it completely unhealthy for herself to stew in such poisonous hatred, promoting the cause publicly online only strengthens prejudices and widens the rift between religions, decreasing the opportunities for people to learn from one another, and learn how to live with one another.

We share a planet with numerous members of numerous faiths, and there's no changing that -- the only thing we can change is HOW we live & interact with one another. We can make our interactions positive or negative. They can be peaceful or confrontational. They can be open-minded & welcoming, or they can be hostile.

I don't think I have to say which is the right choice.

I see what youre saying bluesarah and hithatsmybike. But, we are at war with terrorists, that hate us and all we stand for. and some of Obama's ties with shady people have gotten some citizens on edge. And its justanerd's right to voice her opinion peacefully and express concerns if she so wishes. I have great respect for the Muslim's in this country and of their rights to worship freely and without discrimination. But, at the same time, the people we are fighting, dont hold those same values. Theres nothing wrong with justanerd keeping an eye on the leaders of this country because alot is at stake if we allow ourselves to be destroyed from the inside out. she didnt say anything hateful about anyone. Just that, what will our military do if Obama becomes sympathetic to the Islamic Extremists we are at war with? by reading her post I am not thinking about suddenly of how much I Fear and Hate anyone. and i dont think its right that you guys are jumping to those conclusions. she has every right to voice her concerns.

"Just that, what will our military do if Obama becomes sympathetic to the Islamic Extremists we are at war with?"

Are you serious with this comment? Obama is an American just like you and me.

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 4:42pm

12

alynn I respect your opinion, but I would say that calling our next President a "naive fool" is pretty hateful.

And posting three "Obama=Muslim" blogs in one day isn't a peaceful opinion, it's repetitive fear mongering.

Bill Ayers is an American too, what difference does that make?

Amen! enough with toxic stewing, we need to work together to move forward.

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 4:52pm

15

thank u bluesarah. i respect yours as well. and i agree that some of her blogs come off like its HER that fears the muslim religion. and i guess her calling Obama a naive fool can be left open for discussion or written off as her own personal opinion about the man. but i dont think shes necessarily trying to make anybody Hate anyone. Whats your opinion Justanerd?

I completely agree. but we must never forget Sept. 11th and that they attacked us in the name of the muslim faith. We must remain vigilant and watchful if ever someone adopted that Extreme View and sympatized with their cause. It can always happen.

17

"I thought it was scary serving under LBJ as commander in chief but this guy Obama is a dangerous naive fool. Will our boys in the military be required to sing Cumbya to the terrorists under his command?"

How does thinking the call for prayer is beautiful mean he will ask the military to join hands and sing if we are attacked? That makes no sense.

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 6:32pm

18

I don't think Obama is muslim, and what's more, it wouldn't matter if he was.

So what if he thinks islamic prayer sounds beautiful? It probably does -- a lot of middle eastern languages sound beautiful, much more so than some harsher asian or european dialects. I can only imagine what English sounds like to someone that doesn't speak it.

All you have for evidence that Obama is muslim is that he thinks the prayers sound beautiful, his grandfather in Kenya was muslim (big surprise.. it's KENYA), and he may or may not have briefly attended a "koranic school" as a child.

That is NOT substantial evidence by any stretch of the imagination. You might as well claim I'm muslim for living within walking distance of a mosque, reading a handful of the Koran, and participating in Ramadan as a campus fundraiser for the past 3 years. I'm not muslim and neither is Obama, get over it.

It's like you have no concept of the world outside being a white middle class American Christian. Other people exist! They live different lives than you! Diversity is something that should be celebrated, not hated. Give it a rest. Why not spend less time on the internet posting garbage about religions you don't understand and instead, stepping out of your comfort zone and befriending an actual muslim person and learning about their faith from THEM instead of christians equally in the dark about the religion as you are?

Tue, 11/11/2008 - 10:11pm

19

justanerd- u claim u dont discriminate because ur husband and his family are arabic. well im sure u know many arabs are christian and a handful are jewish also. i said nothing about u discriminating against arabs. u r discriminating against muslims. u speak for them for some reason. "they hate us" really? do they? arent millions of them "us"? yes there are some terrorist organizations in the name of islam who claim hate for western culture blah blah, but that does not speak for all muslims. because if that were the case then i'd say all white people hate black people a la KKK.
and just to shed some light on the world, rather than just the US, muslims are being killed every day by the same terrorists that you and i fear, and muslims are being targeted more than the americans. so muslims all over the world are suffering from terrorists who claim to kill in the name of islam every single day.
just stop hating. speak to a few american muslims. maybe even *gasp* befriend a few. u really need to "think outside the box".

I really miss your other posts - it feels like you are really becoming a one dimensional friend with a religious agenda. I am not going to read any more of your posts relatd to religion or politics, because I want to stay friends. I am glad to hear about other aspects of your life though.

interesting...

22

"The Muslim's hate America."

what about American muslims?

I didn't read the rest. You're tiresome in three sentences or less, so you really need to summarize if you want to get a point across.

Also, I think you should seek some sort of professional therapy. You clearly have a lot of issues that you're struggling with, and I think you could benefit from talking it with someone that wouldn't feed your anxiety.

Wed, 11/12/2008 - 1:02pm

23

Justanerd, not all Muslims or American Muslims hate America. Are you just talking about the terrorists and the governments that aid them? or all of them? because I would have to disagree that ALL Muslims hate us. And Hithatsmybike, people are often very opinionated and passionate about their views and beliefs. i think telling someone they need " professional help" and belittling them is not a productive way with getting your point across. just sayin.

Wed, 11/12/2008 - 2:27pm

24

It's an honest, well-intended suggestion -- there's probably just no "nice" way of telling someone they need to talk it out with a psychologist.

Most people could benefit from therapy at some point in their lives or another, there's no reason to attach negative stigma to getting help. Let's be real here, posting half a dozen anti-islamic articles on what, a women's fashion & gossip website, is not productive or healthy. We all engage in self-destructive behavior sometimes, but this is getting a little out of hand.

Whatever, maybe she could just take up yoga?

Bridget, I just read the last of your comment- so I think I will adress your words there before I bother with your questioning. First of all, it seems that everyone else gets my point from my writing, so I'm not worried about it. Writer's tend to be verbose. I'm certainly not the only one, and it's not a crime. At least I have published works. Do you? I post on the News and Politics section of Pop, as you know. News and Politics is an interest of mine, obviously. Do you think posting all of your blog posts whining about your life on your blog that you created just for PopSugar is any less time or energy consuming? I am perfectly productive and healthy in my life. I actually am at a place where I can counsel other people. I have learned a lot and have been excellently taught. I can only imagine what you yourself engage in and would call destructive for someone else to do, but for you- it's Ok.Your on here constantly. You seem to care about news and politics, so how are you different than me? Just because you don't feel strongly about BO does not mean that you don't feel strongly about other areas of News and Politics- I think it is safe to bet that you have posted several blogs about one topic or another that you are passionate about.....Enough Said.

As for needing therapy, I don't. And that is a rude thing to say,I cannot even believe that you, in your sophmore or junior year of college, have yet to learn your social manners, so I doubt that you were clueless in saying that, or that you didn't realize you were being ride. I think I have had enough of you by now....I am done trying to get along with someone like you.

As for the last question of yours I will ever answer, here you go: enjoy. You are the 1st person on Pop-or ever- that I have had to give up on talking to, you just make me shake my head. You are a stubborn one,B- I'm sure your Mom and Dad tell you that allll the time Eye-wink
.........So, What about American Muslims? The better question is, how can one be a Muslim if he/she rejects the teachings of the Koran? .... For an American Muslim or any other Muslim to say that he/she does not reject God and therefore our heritage in America, and that he/she does not hate Israel and America would be for them to reject the Koran, their Bible---

The Koran says that Allah is the only true God, and Koran scriptures and writings portray the Jewish people as enemies of God and of Islam.
For example, two passages in the Koran (2:65 and 7:166) refer to Jews who deny the truth of Islam as transforming into apes and another (5:60) refers to them as apes and pigs. This troublesome reality is well-documented in The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History (Prometheus, 2008). It is a great read. You should check it out. My library had it.

The Koran is filled with anti-Jewish passages that for the most part, been ignored by peace activists and even in the progressive Christian community in the United States. That is a shame. The muslims have no idea of the true feelings of Americans across America concerning the cult of islam and its followers...and their silence supporting terrorism in America and across the world! What will you do if a Muslim murders one of your family, neighbors or friends?
Muslims have declared war on America, they are the religion that is churning out terrorist after terrorist, when no other religion is, and you are defending them?
The Muslim's do not need a defense, they need to be CHECKED.
An American Muslim who says they are a Muslim but rejects these teachings is a Barrak Obama- they are like him saying that he is a Christian when he doesn't even believe that Jesus is the son of God and that there is only one way to the Father; they would have to reject the Koran like BO rejects the Bible and then lie and say they are Muslim. In that case their faith would still be unacceptable for American's, because they for some reason would feel the need to say they are Muslim whether they truly beleive and live as a true Muslim or not.

alynn, thank you for stating that about telling people they need professional help.
I was quite taken aback that Bridget would say such a thing!Wth? Anyways, I based my comments on what I know about the Koran's teachings and what it says about America, so it seems implausible for me to reconcile that a true Muslim would not hate America, since that is what they are being taught to believe and that is taught in thier Bible and upheld as the true and right way.... Muslim Koran teaches that Allah will someday soon finish his job and annihilate 'The Great Satan', that means America. They call America The Great Satan. Maybe this is just extreme Islam, and there really are Muslims who don't hate America and I just don't know about them (totally possible), and I hope that is true. I have friends that are Pagan as well as monotheistic inn their beliefs and I have friends that are gay as well as straight friends and I am the last person to reject someone because they believe differently than I do. I just feel that any person that believes that America is the enemy and hates our God enough to call America The Great Satan needs to be dealt with, before they do try and destroy America. If there are any Muslim's on here reading this who have something to say about this, please do-you don't have to be worried that I will freak out on you, I honestly have no desire to do that and I do want to learn anout you...

Why, did you want to say more of the same of whatever that was, or to tell the commentor to chill?

No justa, it was your first comment that was removed. I think part of it had to do with my assumption that you'd written this article. And you got condescending and rude about why I'd assumed it. I was going to provide you with the reason for my assumption. In fact, I didn't think you'd written the article, but I thought you'd commented at the end of it:

This part of the article was what made me think you had. My mistake. I don't think it was a glaring error on my part.

I do have published works (I work in a research lab after all), thanks for asking. I don't see what that has to do with anything. Your publications in your church newsletter don't impress me, nor any posts you've written for sugar (seriously?! this is what you're grasping at for credibility??)

As for me being on here 24/7, yeah I am. But I don't have any other responsibilities. I don't have any children or a household to run -- my only job is go to go to school and study. All my class notes are posted online. All my access to scientific and medical journals are online. If I'm not reading from a textbook, I'm going to be on the internet, it's where all the information is. Your presence on here really is the questionable one, since you're supposedly home-schooling your kids and playing full-time mom (which has never struck me as a job with ample free-time until you came along, but hey, I guess hours abound to frequent christian hate sites and research BS about muslims & evolution so you can copy & paste it onto teamsugar).

Yes I have a blog with incessant self-indulgence -- but it being about me is the POINT of its existence. It's not about hating muslims or liberals or jews or atheists. I'd be interested if there exists any other side to you than the evangelical anti-everybody jesus-freak, but you have yet to show it. Maybe YOU should try blogging about your daily life, instead of orchestrating public attacks against religious groups other than your own. It might make you a likable person. That is, assuming there is anything more to you than the hate-filled christian republican..

You have misinterpreted the entire Koran.

Who said church newsletter? I guess you wish that is all it is.
I take time between my responsibilities and playing with my kids for my sanity- you will someday too, if you ever have kids and a husband and a houshold to manage. I won't even comment about going to Christian hate sites- that's ridiculous. I do blog about my daily life. I blog about things going on in the world that interest me and things that I have livd through. I blog to help other people. I have a soul. Maybe you should try blogging to help other people, too. Then maybe you could appriciate me for all of who I am, a multi-faceted human being just like every other person.

demure20, well can you explain it better for, then? Because this is what I got out of the reading I did in it. If there is more to it that I just don't get, please enlighten me? Thanks.

now girls-you know i like to read your fights, but be nice. But not too nice. after all, i need my daily fix of you 2. I have to say, that hithats my bike is a beautiful picture of you and justa-i have formed a friendship with her! (who knew) and find her to be a bit more tolerant than her posts would lead you to believe.

Sat, 11/15/2008 - 4:11pm

I am sorry if my psost come off as intolerant, I am actually intolerant of sin because God is, and I follow His lead, but I am not intolerant of people-if you know what I mean- I must be fair with myself when I sin, and so I must be with others when they sin(after all, we all inevitably will sin because we are sinners.)
None of us will have arrived in our growth in godliness until we are in Heaven, I totally get that. I love people,if I didn't I would feel no concern for thier souls. I would be Ok with the knowledge that tons of people all around me are going to be in Hell when they die. I would know that, but just kind of go on with my daily life and figure "hey, it's not me, so it's not my problem..." Instead, I cannot live with knowing that and doing nothing to try and stop that. That's what happens when the Holy Spirit imparts a fraction of His compassion, mercy and love for people into a heart. The heart changes. It cares for more than just it's own. And, no matter what I do, I will never stop caring and trying to stop souls from choosing the wrong path-unless God takes that Holy-Spirit driven desire away....
